Green Tip of the Moment

DISHWASHING WOES. Did you know that by making good use of a dishwasher is only 'more efficient' than handwashing IF you have a new-generation, water-efficient model AND it's full. Modern dishwashers use anywhere from 10 to 45 litres of water per load. A 4-star-rated dishwasher can use a mere 11.5 Litres. Whereas the 2 existing 5-star-rated dishwashers (Asko and Fisher & Paykel) use even less water and are energy efficient. Put the kettle on, love?

19 May 2009, Author: ~Karen~

When the alarm goes off early in the morning, there are two things most of us do - hit the snooze button and get up and boil the kettle for our morning dose of coffee or tea.  While most of us don't really think too much about our kettle - there are some interesting facts that you should be aware of in light of preparing your favourite 'cuppa'.

1) Did you know that boiling one cup of water uses the same amount of energy required to run a light globe for an hour?!

2) By boiling two cups of water twice daily using an electric kettle, you are creating 36.5kg of greenhouse gases a year - enough to fill 169 wheelie bins. Yuck!

3) Overfilling your kettle can waste enough energy in a week to run a plasma TV for 6 hours.

4) Urns or mini hot-water heaters in your kitchen are very wasteful. They keep a small amount of hot water re-boiling throughout the day. This is a HUGE electricity sucker and overall damaging to our environment.

5) Stove tops are an absolute no-no. Gas and electricity takes a lot longer to heat up as the pan must become hot first before the water can. Heat also leaks out around the sides of the pan as well. An all round energy zapper.

So, that's the bad news.  But here's what you CAN do, to make a difference:

  • Only boil what you need. Waste not, want not! Tea for one? Coffee for one? Only boil one cup instead of two. By doing so, you will save 7.3kg of CO2 each year which is enough to fill 146 balloons OR 17 wheelie bins!
  • Invest in a quick boil kettle - a fantastic eco option. With the "Eco Kettle" you can fill it with as much water as you like but a separate boiling chamber means you can zippily heat the amount you'll actually use then and there.

Go on; invest in a 'good morning' by being eco-smart in the kitchen!  To find out more and purchase online please visit their website:  http://www.neco.com.au/product.asp?pID=1125&cID=77&c=192458
